What is C3-eKerala?

The C3-eKerala project, running from 2023 until 2028, aims to assess the impact of climate change on the marine coastal ecosystem along the coast of India, specifically in the state of Kerala. Its’ acronym stands for “Climate change impact on the marine coastal ecosystem of Kerala”.

Coastal areas with high population density are in the frontline of the unprecedented impacts of climate change. India, one of the top-most densely populated nations of the world has highly vulnerable coastal areas that are exposed to climate change.

Of many in India, one of the most vulnerable ones is the coast of Kerala state with a total length of 593 km. This coastline is the most densely populated coastal zone in southern India. Most of the socio-economic exchanges in this state happen near the coast, making the region especially sensitive to climate change and its impacts.

C3-eKerala is an Indo-Norwegian transdisciplinary effort including scientists, policy maker and social/citizen science experts. The aim is to assess the impact of climate change on the marine coastal ecosystem of Kerala, which will support the development and implementation of relevant mitigation plans through the Kerala state action plan on climate change 2023-2030.
